Teresa Méndez-Faith

Origins

I was born in Asunción, Paraguay, in the middle of the 20th century. I was the first child of Epifanio Méndez Fleitas, an exceptional man of his time, and of Fredesvinda Vall de Méndez, a most wonderful mother. Together with my four younger brothers and one sister, we experienced a very interesting life, ranging from playing games in the presidential palace to barely scraping by for a living as exiles.

From the age of 9 until the fall of Stroessner my life was a sequence of exiles. These began within Paraguay, in San Pedro del Paraná, later as an adolescent in Montevideo, Uruguay, and have extended for several years through my life in the United States. It is in New England that I now live with my husband Ray Faith and son Edward Faith. One irony of history is that in 2008 my first cousin Fernando Lugo Méndez was elected president of Paraguay. He served in that position for four years and today continues to work in the political arena to promote a more just and free society.
